Premier League clubs are set to hold a vote at their annual general meeting next month on a proposal to abolish the video assistant referee (VAR) system from the start of next season. A Wolves statement said the move came “after careful consideration and with the utmost respect for the Premier League, (referees body) PGMOL and our fellow competitors. “However, after five seasons of VAR in the Premier League, it is time for a constructive and critical debate on its future. CNN —Nottingham Forest has accused a Premier League refereeing official of being a fan of relegation rival Luton Town in an extraordinary social media post following the team’s 2-0 defeat by Everton on Sunday. “Three extremely poor decisions - three penalties not given - which we simply cannot accept,” the club wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “We warned the PGMOL [Professional Game Match Officials Limited] that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn’t change him. “The Premier League was extremely disappointed to read the comments made by Nottingham Forest on social media yesterday, following its match against Everton,” the league said in a statement on Monday. PGMOL chief Webb stands by VAR decision on Gordon goal

Nov 15 (Reuters) - Referees body (PGMOL) chief Howard Webb said there was no conclusive evidence available for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to disallow Anthony Gordon's goal for Newcastle United against Arsenal earlier this month. "The ball then comes over and Joelinton challenges Gabriel (Magalhaes), and it could be a foul, might be a foul. The VAR decides that the evidence from the footage isn't clear enough to intervene with a recommendation for a review for a clear error. The VAR went through that diligently and identified no clear evidence to intervene to overturn the goal. However, Webb said VAR fell short during Wolverhampton Wanderers game against Newcastle last month.

Instead, four years on from its Premier League debut, the technology has now seemingly become the main talking point rather than the football itself. Chelsea's win over Tottenham involved a number of huge VAR decisions. Henry Nicholls/AFP/Getty ImagesBeing magnanimous about refereeing decisions isn’t a trait many Premier League managers seemingly possess. “The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better,” the statement read. Whatever the Premier League and PGMOL had in mind for VAR’s development, it surely wasn’t this.

Speaking ahead of his side's Champions League home clash against Sevilla, the Spaniard said he would do the same again. "The game was conditioned by the decisions that were made and it was my duty to be defending my players, supporting my players, supporting my club, defending my people in the best possible way. Arsenal issued a statement on Monday defending Arteta and said the club "deserved better", adding that the officiating body, the PGMOL, urgently needed to address the standard of officiating. "The moment you have a chance in football to put it to bed, do it," Arteta said. "We will have to do a lot of things right tomorrow against a really good team with enormous experience."

VAR 'human error' caused by miscommunication, says PGMOL

On Tuesday the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) released the full audio from the VAR centre relating to the mistake, were the VAR incorrectly communicated "check complete", confirming the on-field decision. "In a lapse of concentration and loss of focus in that moment, the VAR lost sight of the on-field decision and he incorrectly communicated "check complete", therefore inadvertently confirming the on-field decision. After the restart of the match, the VAR and AVAR concluded that the VAR protocol in the Laws of the Game prohibited the match from being stopped. Following the error, VAR officials Darren England and Dan Cook were replaced for two further games last weekend. PGMOL and The FA have also agreed to review the policy to allow match officials to officiate matches outside of FIFA or UEFA designations.

Marc Atkins/Getty ImagesAt the heart of this is a failure in communication by match officials and a failure to put pragmatism before protocol. There is an acceptance that mistakes will happen, and there have been plenty already this season in the Premier League. The release of the audio of the conversations between the match officials would likely influence what Liverpool does next. In rugby union, fans can listen to discussions between match officials on crucial decisions, making the process clear and open for all. The immediate consequence has been that VAR officials England and Cook have not been selected to feature in this weekend’s Premier League games.

The referees' body, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), admitted it was the wrong decision to disallow Luis Diaz's effort, blaming human error, and "should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention". Liverpool released a statement on Sunday saying it was clear the rules of the game were not applied correctly, which undermined sporting integrity, adding that they would explore the options available for resolution. It proved to be a costly mistake for a Liverpool team which ended the match with just nine men on the pitch and lost 2-1 thanks to a Joel Matip own goal with seconds to play. “PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool,” the organization’s statement to CNN read. “The goal by Luis Díaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. However, the goal was ruled out by the referee for offside. Aug 27 (Reuters) - Former Premier League referee Mike Dean said a reference to fellow official Anthony Taylor as a "mate" had been "blown out of context", days after saying he did not alert Taylor to a referring mistake last season to spare him "more grief". The foul was not given by on-field referee Taylor, and Spurs scored a last-gasp equaliser during the resulting play. Dean said later he did not want to send Taylor to the VAR screen to view the incident as he was a "mate" and wanted to spare him "more grief". "It has all been blown out of context. Referring to him as a mate, you have got to look at it in context," Dean told Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday, referring to Taylor.

Klopp was handed a yellow card for celebrating Diogo Jota's 94th-minute winner by running towards the fourth official John Brooks at Anfield, where the German also injured himself in the process. After the game, Klopp accused referee Paul Tierney of having something "against" Liverpool but the referee's body PGMOL reviewed the audio of Tierney and said he acted in a professional manner throughout. But in the moment, I just described my feelings," Klopp told reporters on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday's game against Fulham. "I couldn't get close to the fourth official and I didn't want to get close to the fourth official, and then I pulled my muscle. Klopp, who could face a ban, has been punished for comments about referees in the past.
CNN —Two stoppage-time goals, including a dramatic winner from substitute Diogo Jota, saw Liverpool’s 4-3 victory against Tottenham Hotspur come to a frenetic conclusion – so much so that manager Jürgen Klopp injured himself while celebrating. I didn’t say anything bad … The muscle gave up in that moment.”Jota (seated) came on as a substitute and scored Liverpool's winning goal against Tottenham. Romero and Son both hit the post in the second half before the pair combined on 77 minutes and Son’s 10th league goal of the season made it 3-2. Jota scores the winning goal against Tottenham. In a late push to finish in the top four and secure a place in next season’s Championships League, Liverpool is seven points behind Manchester United having played one game more than its rival.
CNN —The assistant referee who appeared to elbow Liverpool’s Andy Robertson during an English Premier League game on Sunday will not be involved in any matches while English football’s governing body investigates the incident, the body responsible for Premier League referees said in a statement. The Football Association (FA) is investigating the incident which happened at the end of the first half match between Liverpool and Arsenal at Anfield. Video replays appeared to show Robertson brushing past Hatzidakis who responded by lifting his elbow, which hit the player. Robertson was visibly furious and had to be pulled away by his teammates after receiving a yellow card for his subsequent reaction. The incident during the break was one of many flashpoints in a chaotic game at Anfield which eventually finished in a 2-2 draw.

"Immediately after Brentford's game against Arsenal, Ivan Toney received a barrage of abusive, racist direct messages via his Instagram account," the club said on Sunday. Arsenal said they were working with Brentford to identify those involved. "We stand with Ivan Toney," Arsenal said. Referees' body PGMOL accepted on Sunday it was the wrong call and was one of two "significant errors" over weekend's games.
Feb 12 (Reuters) - Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions that went against Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion in Saturday's Premier League matches were down to "human error", the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said on Sunday. Across London, Brighton & Hove Albion saw their quest for European football hit a speed bump at Crystal Palace when they were held to a 1-1 draw but Pervis Estupinan's goal was wrongly chalked off for offside. "PGMOL can confirm its Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb has contacted both Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion to acknowledge and explain the significant errors in the VAR process in their respective Premier League fixtures on Saturday," it said on Sunday. "Both incidents, which were due to human error and related to the analysis of offside situations, are being thoroughly reviewed by PGMOL." Webb, a former Premier League referee, became the Chief Refereeing Officer at the PGMOL this season.

Oct 26 (Reuters) - Bobby Madley will referee a Premier League match for the first time in four years on Saturday after losing his job over a controversial video in 2018. Madley was sacked by the refereeing body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after sending a video mocking a disabled person to a friend. He returned to English football in 2020, taking charge of matches at League One and League Two level, and has officiated 10 games in the Championship this season. The 37-year-old is set to take charge of Brentford's home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to a list of officials for weekend fixtures on the Premier League's website. Madley's brother Andy, who is also a referee, will take charge of Brighton & Hove Albion's home game against Chelsea on the same day.
